Title 46 - Shipping
The minimum service required to qualify an applicant for license as chief engineer of steam and/or motor vessels is: (a) One year of service as first assistant engineer; or, (b) One year of service while holding a license as first assistant engineer. A minimum of six months of this service must have been as first assistant engineer. Service as an assistant engineer is accepted on a two-for-one basis to a maximum of six months (12 months of service as a second or third assistant engineer equals six months of creditable service).
