Title 46 - Shipping
(a) Spare charges shall be carried on all vessels for at least 50 percent of each size and each variety, i.e. foam, soda-acid, carbon dioxide, etc., of portable extinguisher required by §34.50–10(a). However, if the unit is of such variety that it cannot be readily recharged by the vessel's personnel, one spare unit of the same classification shall be carried in lieu of spare charges for all such units of the same size and variety. This section does not apply to unmanned barges. (b) Spare charges shall be so packaged as to minimize the hazards to personnel while recharging the units.
